Fonds Saint-Jacques was a slave plantation established and managed by the Dominicans from 1664 (production of sugar cane). Father Labat continued this practice in the early 18th century. The 22 May 1848 is for Martinique the date of the abolition of slavery, the date of the abolition of the Black Code.
